Ron Roscoe-
Former Fincup defenseman was part of Memorial Cup winners from
1976s
This Hamilton-born defenseman had a good career in hockey, although
he never made the majors.
Born in 1956, Roscoe was a member of the Memorial Cup-winning
Hamilton Fincups of the 1976 season, and later that year was hoping
for a good showing when he was called up for some exhibition games
with the Buffalo Sabres.
“I can’t wait to play in a few exhibition games so
that I can show them what I can and can’t do,” Roscoe
said in a September 1976 Spectator interview. “The exhibition
games will determine whether I’ll stick around or go back
to school.”
At the time, Roscoe was enrolled at York University, and was the
Sabres’ third choice behind Fincup teammate Joe Kowal.
“It’s going to be really tough to crack the defense,” Roscoe
continued. “They have six returning from last year and they’re
all young.”
Despite getting hit in the mouth and playing with swelled lips,
Roscoe was still looking forward to giving it his best.
“The exhibition games will determine whether I stick around
or go to Hershey. I’ll have to make the best of my chance
Sunday and I’m looking forward to it.”
Roscoe didn’t make the Sabres, playing 29 games of the 1976-77
season for the Hershey Bears of the AHL. He then played in two
Michigan-based IHL teams, Kalamazoo and Port Huron, then with the
Milwaukee Admirals and Philadelphia Firebirds before finishing
out his playing with the Dundas Real McCoys in OHA Senior A competition
in 1985-86.
