Mountain Bees lose to Strathroy in
heart-breaker
Last-minute attempt proves fruitless as Bees lose out in
1969 Junior B tourney
Even with a lot of scrambling around the net in the later stages
of the game, the Hamilton Mountain Bees could not get any more
goals past the Strathroy Rocket goalie, losing a tight 2-1 effort
to the Rockets.
The Bees loss also eliminated them from the next round of the
all-Ontario Junior B championships for the 1968-69 season, losing
the best-of-seven semi-final series 4-2.
“I really thought we were going to tie it near the end,” said
Bees coach Jack Perkins after the final game. “We did everything
but put it in.”
Going into this sixth game, held in Strathroy in mid-April, it
could have gone either way, but this game, as the previous four,
was decided by one goal, including the 5-4 overtime win to Hamilton
in the second game.
“They were a much better club than we thought,” said
Rockets coach Jim Strachan after the match. “We underestimated
them because our scouting reports indicated they weren’t
too good.”
Bee goalie Norm Hann was cited as putting in a great performance.
“I’d have to say that Hann kept them in it,” said
Strachan. “He made this a great series with stops you don’t
see in the big league. He has a good future. The club in front
of him was a good skating unit.”
Hann made several key stops in the final period to help his team,
and although the Bees did everything they could, including pulling
Hann late in the game to add a sixth attacker, they could not score
on Strathroy.
The Bees were outscored 29-25 by the Rockets during the series,
and the loss concluded the team’s 64-game season.
