Kevin Harvey –
Scrappy left winger debuted with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL
recently
As the younger brother of former NHL player Todd Harvey, Kevin
Harvey is making his own mark in hockey as a player with the Syracuse
Crunch of the American Hockey League.
Born in Sheffield in September of 1984, Harvey was selected by
the Calgary Flames in the 2003 NHL draft after playing with the
Kingston Voyageurs and the Oakville Blades of the OPJHL, then the
Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL. He played another season with Oakville,
then for the 2003-04 season played 59 games in the OHL for the
Owen Sound Attack.
The next season he went to the Georgetown Raiders, but he started
his career in earnest with the New Mexico Scorpions of the Central
Hockey League. During his 2006-07 season, he played 58 games with
five goals, and for the 2007-08 season, he played 51 games and
had eight goals.
In August of 2008 Harvey signed with the Reading Royals of the
ECHL, but his season with the Maple Leaf farm team was cut short
as he was called up to play with the Crunch early in December of
2008 with a professional tryout contract.
The six-foot-two, 196-pound left winger has played 22 games with
the AHL club to date, with four goals. The Crunch is a Columbus
Blue Jackets affiliate.
Harvey has been known to duke it out on the ice, and was popular
with the fans in New Mexico as the team’s enforcer.
“I’ve always had a tough instinct just because of
the way I play the game,” Harvey is quoted as saying in the
Albuquerque Tribune. "I get under people's skin, so they're
always wanting to come after me."
Harvey was also a favorite of his Scorpion teammates, and appreciates
he has been able to pursue his passion of hockey:
I'm just here to have fun," Harvey said. "I could be
working a 9-to-5 right now, but I'd rather be here with the boys.”
