The Fearman Hockey Team, Hamilton Champs of 1905
This photo depicts the Hamilton Wholesale League Champions of
1905, the Fearman hockey team. The winning cup is displayed in
front of the team captain, A. C. Hagar, who was also the team’s
rover.
Fearmans was an early Hamilton meat-packing concern. Started by
F. W. Fearman in the 1850s with the production of pork products,
the company grew to one of the largest in the country by the 1880s.
Fearman was also a staunch promoter of Hamilton, helping to advance
the city’s school and library systems along with sitting
as a director for the Hamilton Board of Trade and the Hamilton
Street Railway.
The Fearman residence, built in 1863 and known as Ivey Lodge,
is still situated on Stinson Avenue in the city and a reminder
of the impressive gothic architecture prevalent among the wealthy
in early Hamilton.
