Now with the AHL Phantoms, Syvret also played with the
Knights and Bulldogs
Now playing defense with the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American
Hockey League, Danny Syvret was the first hockey player to win
the Golden Horsehoe Athlete of the Year.
At the time Syvret was playing with the Hamilton Bulldogs when
he won the award, held early in 2006.
“It was a good feeling just to be a finalist,” he
said at the time. “It’s an honor to be included with
these tremendous athletes.”
Born in June of 1985, this Millgrove native started with Cambridge
in the Junior B loop for the 2001-02 season, but it was his next
three years with the London Knights of the OHL that he rose to
prominence, especially in his 2004-05 year when he had 69 points,
including 23 goals for his 62-game season.
And in his final year with the Knights, he helped his squad to
win the Memorial Cup, along with being chosen to represent Canada
in the World Juniors.
He was signed by the Edmonton Oilers for the 2005-06 season, and
played 62 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs along with 10 games
for the Oilers. He then played with the Grand Rapids Griffins of
the AHL, plus 16 more games with the Oilers. Syvret was loaned
out by the Edmonton farm team to participate in the Spengler Cup
in Switzerland as part of Team Canada, and winning a silver medal
with the team in 2006. He was also a member of the 2007 team.
Before starting with the Phantoms in the 2008-09 season, Syvret
played with the Springfield Falcons, and the Hershey Bears, both
of the AHL. He is now in his fourth year of professional hockey,
and his first with the Phantoms, the Philadelphia Flyers affiliate.
Some of his accolades include the Max Kaminsky Trophy for Defenseman
of the Year (2004-05), the Dewalt Top Defenseman of the Year (2004-05),
and the London Knights Scholastic Player of the Year (2002-03).
For the 2008-09 season so far, he has played in 44 games, scoring
six times, and with 35 assists accumulated 41 points.
