Left-winger started with Hamilton Red Wings
Watts had 11-year career in minors, NHL, and overseas
Brian Watts started his hockey career with the Hamilton Red Wings
as a second round Detroit draft pick in 1964. The left winger played
on the same Junior A squad as some other players such as Peter Mahovlich,
Real Lemieux, and Nick Libett.
While Mahovlich went on to play with the Montreal Canadiens, Lemieux
to the Los Angles Kings and New York Rangers, and Libett with the
Detroit Red Wings, Watts, who was born in Hagersville in 1947, played
two seasons with Hamilton, then went to the Michigan Tech Huskies
for four seasons.
In his two years in Hamilton, Watts played 97 games, scoring 14
times and earning 23 assists.
After playing for several semi-pro teams in the AHL, CHL, and IHL,
Watts went to the NHL as a Red Wing, but played only four games.
He then went to the New Haven Nighthawks of the American Hockey
League for the remainder of the 1975-76 season, where he picked
up eight goals in 57 games.
He finished off his career in Europe, as a member of Sweden's IF
Bjorkloven Umea, with seven goals in 25 games before retiring.
Watts' best season was playing for another overseas team, the London
Lions, in 1973-74. The Lions had ties to the Red Wing organization,
and the team lasted only the one season. While there he amassed
34 goals and 30 assists in the British league in 70 games.
His best year in North America was his stint with the AHL's Fort
Worth Wings, scoring 26 goals in 71 games.
