Al Raymond Jensen

The Beginning:

Jensen had a stellar junior hockey career playing on a powerful Hamilton Fincups hockey team that went on to capture the 1976 memorial Cup. He was rated by NHL Central Scouting as the No. 1 goaltender available for 1978 draft. Was on Hamilton (OHL) team that relocated to St. Catharines for 1976-77 season and then returned to Hamilton for the 1977-78 season. Represented the St.Catharines Fincups at the OHL Allstar Game in 1977 and Made the Allstar teams twice in the OHL. The Second Allstar Team in 1977 and the First Allstar Teams in 1978.

Jensen also represented Team Canada twice in the World Junior Championships. In 1977 helped Canada win the silver medal in Czechoslovakia and the following season helped Canada capture the bronze medal at home in Montreal, Canada.

He was then selected by Detroit Red Wings round 2, #31 overall 1978 NHL Amateur Draft.
The Wings played him for one season in the IHL for Kalamazoo Wings in 1978-79 and helped them win the League Championship, the Turner Cup.

The following season, 1979-80, Jensen was then promoted to the AHL Adirondack Red Wings. There he played for two seasons and helped them capture the Calder Cup in his second season with them.

The NHL:

Jensen only played one game for the Red Wings before he was traded to the Washington Capitals in July 1981 in exchange for Mark Lofthouse. He was credited for helping guide the team to its first playoff appearance in the 1982-83 NHL season. The next season Jensen would achieve even more as he was a co-winner of the William M. Jennings Trophy with teammate Pat Riggin. (The William M. Jennings Trophy is an annual award given to "to the goalkeeper(s) having played a minimum of 25 games for the team with the fewest goals scored against it). Played almost six seasons with the Capitals before being traded to the Los Angeles Kings in the 1986-87 season for defenseman Garry Galley. He only played in five games for the Kings before returning back to the Capitals that same season where he played in the final six games of his NHL career.

Holds Washington Capitals team records of best career winning percentage (.644) and best winning percentage in one season (.738 in 1985-86). Jensen played n 179 NHL games
and posted a 95-53-18 regular season record. He also played in 10 NHL playoff games
winning five and losing five and a 3.21 goals-against-average.

Capped off his hockey career by playing one season (20 games) in the AHL for the New Haven Nighthawks.

Worked for NHL Central Scouting Service into 2002-03 season.

On December 14, 1982, Al was the goaltender who allowed Marcel Dionne's 500th career National Hockey League goal.

Ran an indoor ball-hockey team in Glens Falls, New York, during off-seasons of his NHL playing days.

Named to goaltender position on all-time Hamilton (OMJHL/OHL) team by a CHL panel in 1999.
